Dear Colleagues

Welcome to the tenth and final issue of the SOVS newsletter for 2018.

First, congratulations to the final year students who graduated on 16 November! The school wishes you well for your future careers – we hope that you will make the most of the increasing opportunities available to those with a BOptom degree from Auckland. Also, thank you again to the academic and professional staff who continue to make all this possible.

Congratulations also to our Year IV student, Amosa Lene, who has been selected as a recipient for the Prime Ministers Scholarship Asia – Internship Award for Mumbai and will undertake a six or eight week summer internship placement in Mumbai. For more information on the scholarship scheme see here and for more about the 2018 awards granted to UoA students, see here.

Welcome to our summer students Joy Qin, Sachi Rathod, Joyce Wong, Robin Laven, Wengcong Zhou and Muthana Noori; we hope you will all find the experience of working on a research project over the summer engaging, productive and satisfying.

Welcome also to visiting Master’s student Carrie Burgess from Austria who will be doing an extern with Ehsan Vaghefi’s group, PhD student Mandy Ho from the UK, who will be working with Sam Schwarzkopf, and Dr Elisa Infanti, who will also be visiting Sam Schwarzkopf’s Lab from 19 November for a month. We hope you all enjoy your time at the School and that you get an opportunity to visit the New Zealand outside of Auckland, while you are here.

Congratulations to Steven Dakin (PI), Lisa Hamm, Catherine Morgan and Sam Schwarzkopf for receiving a prestigious Marsden Grant to study ‘The cortical limit on visual acuity’.

Finally we welcome our Head of School Steven Dakin back from his research and study leave in the UK – we hope it has been a productive period free from the administrative duties of the HoS role.

Wishing you all the best for the Christmas / New Year break, and the start of 2019!
