Dr Phil Turnbull, Senior Lecturer with SOVS, is working on a virtual patient that can be programmed to have a range of ocular disorders and uses probability models to determine their responses.
The patient’s appearance is generated with artificial intelligence (AI), and the head has independent eyes with fully reactive pupils.
This application will allow students to practice some of their clinical skills outside of the preclinical labs, a need which is made more prominent by the COVID-19 lockdown. Currently, the emphasis is on entrance tests and visual acuity, but the aim is to expand into more aspects of the exam.
