Bioengineer and Senior Lecturer Dr Ehsan Vaghefi received Science for Technological Innovation (SfTI) funding in 2019 to investigate the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to prevent diabetes retinopathy (loss of vision) for diabetes sufferers in New Zealand.
SfTI feature Ehsan in an article about testing a new application of AI which provides a cost-effective instant screening process that can be performed from a patient’s home. Huge advantages of using this new technology include removing economic barriers and the issue of travel to a hospital for remote residents, as well as alleviating pressure on hospitals.
We’re excited about the benefits AI is bringing to eye health care in Aotearoa and look forward to hearing more in future about the work being done by Ehsan and his team.
