Professional Teaching Fellow Kerry Atkinson is the recipient of a 2020 Dennis Pickup Clinical Educator Award. These awards are named for Dennis Pickup, a former CEO of Auckland Healthcare, which is now known as the Auckland District Health Board. The awards recognise clinicians who give their time to assist in the education of health professionals on a part-time basis.
Kerry says “Clinical teaching is really enjoyable and an opportunity to pass on useful skills and prepare undergraduates for successful careers. It’s very rewarding to see them blossom into clinicians starting their chosen career.”
When Kerry was asked why he thought he was chosen to receive this award, his modest response was “Maybe because I’ve been around the longest and am enthusiastic about optometry!”
